Jesse Alcala
PT, DPT, CSOMT
Meet Doctor Jesse Alcala, PT, DPT, better known as Jesse! He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2015. Initially, Jesse was studying to become an athletic trainer but in his Junior year, while attending UTSA, he learned about physical therapy and the endless possibilities of helping individuals from all walks of life and not limiting himself to only athletes. He wanted to help as many individuals as possible.
In 2018, he obtained his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and worked at an outpatient clinic in the Medical Center of San Antonio for 2 years. He soon discovered the big gap when it came to treating athletic and active populations, the cookie-cutter exercises given to them were not good enough for performance so he decided to pursue an Orthopedic Fellowship with the Institute For Athlete Regeneration Education Systems (IAR).
Dr. Alcala’s Certifications include:
- Certified Specialist of Orthopedic Manual Therapy
- Sports & Orthopedic Regenerative Dry Needling Level One Practitioner
- Running Rehabilitation Specialist
- Barbell Rehabilitation Certified
- Soon to be Orthopedic Fellow in Manual Therapy
Dr. Alcala began practicing physical therapy at an outpatient clinic as a staff therapist. He was excited, happy to help as many people as he could, and ready to utilize the skills that he gained throughout his schooling. It took Dr. Alcala about a year of practicing to realize that the healthcare system and insurance had failed the community and Physical Therapists who worked in an outpatient setting. Seeing multiple people per day and providing low-quality care due to the insurance reimbursement dropping each year, Dr. Alcala became frustrated and even depressed about the career he chose to pursue.
Dr. Alcala knew that there was much more to being a Physical Therapist and providing the excellent care he knew he could provide to people. He then began doing mentorship hours with Dr. Edwin Serrano who had just opened Positive Action Rehab and Performance. During this time, Dr. Alcala was able to see the potential of working in a performance-based practice in which he can utilize his skills and knowledge to provide the best physical therapy care for his clients without the restrictions of insurance. Upon completion of his hours and working full-time at his current insurance-based clinic, Dr. Alcala knew Positive Action was the place he needed to be.
He has experience working with people from all walks of life and helps individuals achieve their goals in returning to moving without pain. He especially enjoys helping active older adults get rid of shoulder and hip-related issues. His favorite part of the job is being able to see people improve from session to session and going back to moving without pain.
In his free time, he goes to CrossFit at the Fit Stop. He likes running, playing cards, and spending time with Rex, his corgi four-legged friend.
